This set up is different than when I have for my dogs, but not entirely unrelated. In addition to a stone dog house, my dogs also have access to the garage (and the seasonally heated dog houses that are inside there) through a dog door that enters a ground-level window. After entering the dog door, there is a short staircase down to the big dog house, which is tucked under the stairs. The top of the inside dog house is flat, and has a loafing area on top in case the terriers get too warm or want to get away from one another. Been working great for 15 years. Of course the dogs sleep inside the house at night, in crates in the laundry room.
