Richard Byrd's Igloo
Igloo the Fox Terrier owned by Richard Byrd. Byrd and dog on the right.
An old-fashioned fox terrier (what we would now call a Jack Russell terrier) by the name of "Igloo" accompanied explorer Richard E. Byrd on his first trip to the Antarctic.
Igloo is buried in Dedham, a suburban of Boston, in the Pine Ridge Cemetery for Small Animals. His large, roughly shaped pinkish stone, has a carved inscription: "IGLOO. He was more than a friend."
Igloo traveled everywhere with Byrd and was even the subject of a biography (entitled "Igloo") by Jane Brevoort Walden (G. P. Putnam's, 1931).
