Over at the Southern Rockies Nature Blog, Chas Clifton points to a story about a couple that went on a day hike in Angeles National Forest which turned into an overnight stay and a helicopter evacuation because their 80-pound dog got sore feet and would not move. And exactly how much did this cost the American taxpayer? The article does not say, but thousands to be sure.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, two pig hunters in New Zealand got caught in a blinding snow storm but were otherwise fine with fire, shelter, and two well-fed and warm dogs when a helicopter showed up to "rescue" them. They did not need rescue, but the helicopter pilot would not take no for an answer: they had to be rescued and they would be arrested if they did not cooperate. But no, the rescue did not include the dogs; the pilot required the hunters to abandon their dogs on the mountainside. Now, a week later, two of the three dogs have been accounted for, but one is till out there, whereabouts unknown.
