Coffee and Provocation

back

Butcher's Dog Fail:

Rotties, Pit Bulls, and Boxers are all the same dog -- "butcher's dogs" dressed up for the ring with different names.   A Rottweiler is a Rottweiler Metzgerhund or a butcher's dog from the town of Rottweil.  A Boxer is simply a Bullenbeisser or bull biter. A Pit Bull is pretty self-descriptive -- it is a stock catching "butcher's dog" of the oldest and most basic kind. Here's a modern boxer that is a total fail as a butcher's dog.

A Dog Backpack Fail:
Seriously... what kind of copy editor and buyer allowed this bit of nonsense into the catalogue?

Ortovox Snow Avalanche Dedicated Dirt Dog Stuff:
Ortovox now sells dedicated dirt dog stuff -- a repositioned avalanche transmitter and locator with a collar pouch.

Whooping Crane Idiocy:
Being stupid is a right, but it's not an obligation!

This Explains a Lot:
Obesity causes brain damage or maybe brain damage causes obesity.

Not a Big Cat Myth:
A Mountain Lion was live caught -- and released -- by a trapper in Missouri, with a little help from the DNR.

Parking Predators:
Dave Gardetta writing about parking in LA Magazine: "I truly believe that when men and women think about parking, their mental capacity reverts to the reptilian cortex of the brain. How to get food, ritual display, territorial dominance—all these things are part of parking, and we’ve assigned it to the most primitive part of the brain that makes snap fight-or-flight decisions. Our mental capacities just bottom out when we talk about parking."

Car Repair Predators:
If a car repair is worth your time, RepairPal is a pretty good resource for checking the average cost of repairs against whatever it is your local shop is charging you.

Attack of the Zombies:
Bees are getting wrecked by parasitic flies that turn them into zombies.

Doomed from Birth?
The British cohort studies, first started in March 1946 with the weighing, measuring and enrolling of 13,687 babies born during one week is now 65 years old.  And what's it show? One result that is true across all cohorts:  children who are born into better-off families are more likely, on average, to do well during their lives on almost every measure.  The poor were worse off on most counts.

The Democratic Debates:
Did you know there are also Democratic candidate debates?  My favorite, so far, features  Vermin Supreme for President, and yes we have video!

Oh The Places You'll Go!
Awesome video reading of Dr. Seuss’ last book as read by folks at the 2011 Burning Man festival/be-in.  Check it out!

Renewables Beat Nukes:
The latest data from the Energy Information Agency shows that for the first nine months of 2011, renewables produced just under 12% of US energy, while nuclear power produced about 10.6%.
