If you live in Virginia, your dogs will eventually come across snakes. This little fellow was in the backyard, bayed up by both of my terriers on the back patio. This snake was seriously injured before I got outside, and I terminated the little fellow and left him for the foxes to find in the front yard. Pretty sure this is an immature black rat snake. Not a poisonous snake, in any case. Snakes are good things -- even the poisonous ones. I'm sorry this little fellow had such a large chunk out of one side.
